One Day Driving Itinerary for the Isle of Skye (Best Stops from Portree)

If you only have one day on the Isle of Skye, the best way to experience it is by car. Driving the island lets you reach dramatic cliffs, ancient landscapes, and tiny coastal villages that make Skye one of the most unforgettable places in Scotland.

This one day driving itinerary for the Isle of Skye focuses on the island’s northern highlights around the Trotternish Peninsula. Starting in Portree, you’ll visit iconic viewpoints like the Old Man of Storr and the Quiraing, discover hidden gems like dinosaur footprints, and finish with one of the most scenic drives in Scotland.

If you’re planning a longer trip through the Highlands, this route fits perfectly into a larger Scotland road trip like the one outlined in my full Scotland road trip itinerary.

Here’s exactly how to spend one perfect day driving the Isle of Skye.

Stop 1: Portree Town

Start your Isle of Skye itinerary (1 day) in Portree, the island’s largest town and the perfect base for exploring the north side of Skye.

The harbor is famous for its row of colorful houses overlooking the water. It’s one of the most photographed spots on the island and a great place to grab breakfast or coffee before starting the drive if your hotel doesn’t offer it.

Don’t miss in Portree

  • Portree Harbour – the classic colorful houses view
  • The Lump – a small hill with panoramic views of the harbor and surrounding cliffs

The short walk up to The Lump leads to an old watchtower and gives you a peaceful perspective over the town before the day’s adventure begins.

Stop 2: Old Man of Storr

Next, drive about 15 minutes north to one of the most iconic landmarks on Skye: the Old Man of Storr.

The jagged rock pinnacle rises dramatically from the landscape and is part of the larger The Storr.

If you have time, you can hike the trail to the base of the formation (about 1.5–2 hours round trip). But if you’re following this Isle of Skye 1 day driving itinerary, the Storr Lookout Point offers quick views without committing to the full hike.

Tip: Walk a short distance uphill from the parking area for the best vantage point.

Stop 3: Brothers Point (Rubha nam Brathairean)

Continue north along the scenic coastal road to Brothers Point.

This lesser-known stop is one of the hidden gems when driving the Isle of Skye. A short walk across grassy fields leads to dramatic coastal cliffs and sweeping views over the sea.

It’s far quieter than many of Skye’s famous landmarks, which makes it a perfect place to slow down and enjoy the landscape.

Stop 4: Kilt Rock & Mealt Falls Viewpoint

One of the easiest and most spectacular viewpoints on the island is Kilt Rock and Mealt Falls.

The basalt cliffs resemble the pleats of a traditional Scottish kilt, which is how the formation got its name.

Right next to it, Mealt Falls plunges dramatically off the cliffs straight into the sea below.

This is a quick stop with a parking lot and viewing platform, making it an easy addition to any One-day Isle of Skye driving itinerary.

Stop 5: An Corran Beach (Dinosaur Footprints)

Stop 5: An Corran Beach (Dinosaur Footprints)

A short drive further north brings you to An Corran Beach.

This beach is famous for its Jurassic dinosaur footprints, which were discovered in the rock formations along the shoreline.

At low tide, you can walk out and look for the preserved tracks left behind millions of years ago. Even if you don’t spot them right away, the beach itself is beautiful and much quieter than other stops on the island.

Stop 6: The Quiraing Viewpoint

One of the absolute highlights of driving the Isle of Skye is the otherworldly landscape of The Quiraing.

This dramatic landslip features towering cliffs, rolling green hills, and rock formations that look like something from another planet.

Stop at Quiraing Viewpoint for one of the most breathtaking views on the island.

If time allows, the Quiraing loop hike is one of the best in Scotland. But even just taking in the scenery from the viewpoint makes this stop worth the drive. If you’re spending more than one day on the Isle of Skye, this would make a great addition to your itinerary.

Stop 7: Shulista Phone Box

For a fun and quirky stop, drive about 15 minutes from the Quiraing to the Shulista Phone Box.

This classic red British phone box sits along a quiet coastal road with stunning views of the surrounding hills and sea. It’s a popular photo spot and a fun, unexpected addition to your one day Isle of Skye driving itinerary.

Funny story, when we stopped, there was no one else around except this group of cyclists that insisted on resting and leaning their bikes up against the phone box, not really getting the hint that we wanted to take photos. They were very nonchalantly taking their time. (Insert eye roll here!) I always strive to be a conscious tourist, making sure I’m courteous to others. Some people can be so oblivious!

Continue Your Scotland Road Trip: Glenfinnan Viaduct

If you’re continuing your journey through the Scottish Highlands, you can head toward the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct.

The drive takes about 3.5 hours via the A87, crossing the Skye Bridge and winding through some of the most scenic landscapes in the Highlands. Be sure to time your drive appropriately and plan to be at the Viaduct at least an hour in advance of when the train is scheduled to go over the viaduct. This will give you ample time to park and walk to the viewing area.

Fans of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets will recognize the viaduct as the railway bridge where the Hogwarts Express travels across the valley. In real life, you can view the dramatic Jacobite Steam train pass over the iconic bridge, or choose to actually ride on it (which would take a full day to carve out beyond your one day itinerary on the Isle of Skye).

Tips for Driving the Isle of Skye

Driving around Skye is incredible, but there are a few things to keep in mind:

Start early. Popular spots like the Old Man of Storr and the Quiraing can get crowded later in the day.

Expect narrow roads. Many routes have single-track sections with passing places.

Check the weather. Conditions change quickly on the island, and fog can roll in unexpectedly.

Bring layers. Even in summer, the wind and rain can appear without warning.

Final Thoughts on This Isle of Skye 1 Day Itinerary

If you’re short on time, this route is one of the best ways to experience the island. In a single day driving the Isle of Skye, you’ll see towering rock formations, coastal cliffs, waterfalls, and even dinosaur footprints.

While Skye deserves several days if you have them, this one day driving itinerary for the Isle of Skye captures many of the island’s most unforgettable landscapes. But add extra time if you desire to hike.

And once you experience it, chances are you’ll already be planning a return trip.
